A retaining wall holds back soil, so we build it to work as a structure and not just a face. Footings go below grade on compacted subgrade, with rebar tied through the stem and drainage rock and pipe behind the wall. Poor drainage is what fails walls: water builds pressure and pushes them out of plumb.
